Getting Around
You will need a vehicle to explore Southern Oregon. Public Transportation services are minimal, and most highlights require driving.
However, a standard 2WD vehicle will be acceptable for all destinations featured.
#1. Crater Lake
Considered one of the seven wonders of Oregon, the color tones of the blue water will blow you away deep. It’s the deepest lake in America and one of the deepest on earth. Once a volcano surrounded by cliffs, Crater Lake is almost 2,000 feet high and boasts a picturesque. Crater Lake is also home to hikes in old-growth forests and cross-country ski trips in the winter months. Many of the roads and facilities close during the winter, but the park is open and accessible all year long. Crater Lake is approximately 1.5 hours from Medford, Oregon.
#2. Chase waterfalls in the Rogue Valley & Umpqua National Forest.
Southern Oregon is home to many breathtaking waterfalls, many of which can be visited on a day trip from Medford, all along one stretch of highway. A visit to Toketee Falls is a must-do when visiting Southern Oregon! The hike to the main waterfall viewpoint is less than a mile with no real elevation gain. Though it is not paved nor wheelchair accessible, it is manageable for most, even with mobility issues.
#3. Raft the Rouge River
Once used by Hollywood to film “The River Wild,” Rogue River rafting is a must-do in the warmer seasons. Different sections of the river offer opportunities for all skill levels. Those who want to cool off and float can arrange a rental and drop off from Shady Cove and never need to paddle. Thrill seekers, meanwhile, can aim for the Galice section and navigate a Class V rapid.

#5. Hellgate Boat Excursion
Known as one of the best things to do as a family, take a thrilling ride on the Rogue River on a fast-paced, scenic joyride. Make it even more of an adventure by opting for one of their 4-hour brunch or dinner options, where you will enjoy a narrated tour of 36 miles of the river through the beautiful Hells Canyon before stopping at Hellgate River Lodge for a champagne brunch or dinner.
#6. Take a hike at Prescott Park
Prescott Park is adjacent to the eastern boundary of the City of Medford on Roxy Ann Peak. There are 16 trails you can hike on, with 9 being easy, 6 intermediate, and 1 difficult trail. If you don’t like hiking but want to see how incredible Medford looks from a bird’s eye view, I encourage you to drive to the viewing area.
#7. Attend the Shakespeare Festival
The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF), established in 1935, is a renowned repertory theater in Ashland, Oregon. It offers diverse performances, including Shakespearean plays, classic works, contemporary pieces, and world premieres. The OSF season typically runs from late April through December.
